Lots of terrible things happening in the world right now, but the dishonest #NetZero claims of #GFANZ and its apologists are in the running for doing the most long term damage to the climate. We're in a hole but #GFANZ members keep funding fossil companies to keep digging.

This is a crucial thread from Rebecca Newsom: relying on offsetting is a triumph of hope over experience. The only way to meet the Paris climate goals is to cut emissions rapidly. Cutting emissions isn't simple but countries and companies must simply start to cut them now.

It's almost as if the Treasury wants to support fossil fuels instead of decarbonising the power grid. Sir Jeremy Hunt MP If grid access for renewables is the problem, subsidising oil/gas production is NOT the solution.

The #CERAWeek spokesperson seems a big confused - #CERAWeek is chock full of activists - lobbyists and advocates for the oil industry. Svitlana Romanko should be the keynote speaker. If we want to stop weaponising oil and gas, end dependence on fossil fuels.

.Bill McKibben nails it. FIs drive the climate emergency as much as the fossil fuel companies they fund but we won't solve the problem one bank at a time. Government has to change the rules: investment and lending aligned with 1.5 needs to be mandatory now.

Which suggests that 95% of the FTSE 100 either have no net zero plan or one that can't be taken seriously, nearly 18 months after the Government’s claimed to make decarbonisation plans mandatory by 2023... London, we have a problem.

Important work here from Positive Money UK 🦋 @positivemoneyuk.bsky.social - in 2021 Rishi Sunak declared his intention to make the UK a world beating green financial centre. He has missed every opportunity. We must address the interlocking climate, energy and cost of living crises - now.

Contrary to what appears to be #UKGovernment policy (based on blind faith and fairy tales), adding to global fossil fuel supplies by massively subsidising N Sea drilling will make the climate emergency worse, not better. Thanks Doug Parr for making that clear!

Party politics seems to taint everyone that comes within sniffing distance of #Westminster, but Caroline Lucas is the exception the proves the rule. Occasionally "thank you for your service" actually seems appropriate. Looking forward to years more collaboration.

More evidence that the loopholes in the #windfalltax were really the main event. Rishi Sunak intended to drive more investment into fossil fuels in the North Sea, not drive the low carbon transition. theguardian.com/business/2023/…

.Hugo Tagholm nails it. #Rosebank won't lower bills, won't increase energy security, will make the #ClimateEmergency worse. This isn't complicated. #StopRosebank

Crucial reading from IPPR Josh Emden Nothing is easy but it's not complicated: clean energy, not new oil and gas, will deliver energy security, lower bills, and the jobs of the future. An ambitious rollout of renewables is by far the best of way reducing oil and gas imports.

One could be forgiven for thinking that Kemi Badenoch and her colleagues in the Cabinet were trying to escalate the culture wars... EVs won't solve every problem transport throws at us - but Louise Haigh gets it: essential to net zero and the future of the UK car industry

The Government and in particular Andrew Bowie MP telling absolute porkie pies on BBC The World at One - the so called k#climatecompatibilycheckpoint does NOT include scope 3 emissions- the burning of oil or gas - in the assessment of environmental impact of oil and gas projects.
