🧵The job market for junior devs is not great these days (to put it mildly), so here are a few tips from recruiters, hiring managers, and my own experience about how to get your first job as a developer: #CodeNewbie #DEVCommunity

TBH If you're a Tech worker with say 5yrs+ experience, you hold all the cards employment wise. Auto-reply recruiters with "For me to leave x, I would need Y compensation and working conditions Z (remote,hybrid...) otherwise is no use for us to have an initial chat".

The tech job market has never been more polarized: Demand for senior tech workers has never been higher, compensation is hitting all-time highs, globally. New grad and junior folks have never had such a hard time getting that first job. A thread on what's happening and why:

The most valuable skill for a junior dev to learn is "communication". I've been interviewing engineers for 15+ years, and maybe this advice will seem obvious. A quick thread of great communication in an interview to help you land that software dev role. x.com/SergiiKirianov…

Let's suppose you've just started making basic projects and you want to showcase your work with others but you can't afford to pay for a hosting service. In such a case what you're supposed to do then? 🤔 Don't worry there are quite few free web hosting services out there.🔥

Carnage4Life Taylor Poindexter It's important for folks to know this. Many people don't need financial advisor, but if you do, it's good to know how to find the right kind. I documented my family's process navigating this here: acjay.com/tag/our-financ…

Solving a problem of the coding interview is mainly about recognizing patterns. Here are some patterns you must know: 👇Thread

You'd think the highest-paid sw engineers spend most of their time writing code. If you observed them, you'll find they read a lot of code and documents, talk with lots of people, and think a lot. Then they do what helps the business the most. And it's often not writing code.

Code review: Software engineer: "The variable name isn't descriptive; I'd make it more expressive." Senior sw engineer: "Suggest to not couple this class tightly for no reason." Staff sw engineer: "Why are we building from scratch over using {Service that does exactly this}?"

Interviewer: "Where do you see your career headed?" Candidate: "I want to be a software architect." I: "Why?" C: "Honestly: I'm getting tired of coding. I'd like to do the planning, others implementing my ideas." I: "Let me be frank. We don't have this kind of role here."

Gergely Orosz For me it was: obsessing about solving the problem will help you 10x more than obsessing about code and specific technologies. If you do the latter, you'll be part of the problem more times than the solution.

I was giving advice to a friend who recently started a freelancing business after a decade of being an employee. Here are 12 habits that work fine when an employee employee, but ones worth unlearning to be a more successful entrepreneur/freelancer:

A year ago today, I woke up with an Always pad stuck to my bum, after twisting during the night. This caused a rash the next day and after a weekend of pain, I was admitted to hospital with necrotising fasciitis and septic shock.

Instead of Seniority/Titles, why don’t we talk about what the job will actually entail? The degrees of autonomy one will have are a much better proxy than titles. - Solution Implementer = Junior? - Problem Solver = Senior? - Problem Finder = Staff+? Loved this Randall Koutnik.

My first manager at Uber started a GitHub page back at the time with resources to become a more proficient developer - ones he personally found helpful (he did not have a CS degree). I realized he is *still* updating it, 7 years later! A neat list: github.com/charlax/profes…
