Interesting hearing Grainne Hurst from the BGC explaining her disappointment to Nick Luck at horse racing aligning itself with anti-gambling campaigners. She is right of course. Racing needs a thriving gambling industry. Siding with the anti-gambling lobby is an absurd position.

Our CEO Grainne Hurst joined Nick Luck ahead of next week’s Budget to outline why a tax hike on betting would have consequences well beyond the industry. “If costs go up through tax increases in the Budget, there will be less money to fund racing. That's the bottom line.”

“You haven’t ended chaos. You are the chaos.” Fair play to Beth Rigby here. She absolutely dismantles Keir Starmer’s broken tax promises in this interview and doesn’t put up with any of his bullshit or waffle.

One glimer of hope for British horse racing is that oncourse betting turnover increased from £227m million in 2023-24 to £248m in 2024-25. An increase of £21m (9%).

Since the Budget, two completely different versions of reality have emerged. On one hand you have a significant number of people within racing who genuinely believe they “won”: that holding racing at 15% while pushing Remote Gaming Duty to 40% and sports betting to 25% somehow

And so the next anti-gambling battalion surges forward - let's hope racing's warm relations with those who want to see the sector shrink enables another carve-out... Raising taxes was never going to be enough.

Fairness on the high street must include betting shops. Licensed betting shops are lawful, regulated leisure venues that support 42,000 jobs, contribute £1bn in tax, and are closing, not expanding. Yet they’re excluded from business rates relief given to similar venues.
