That's exactly how it works - šŸ‡¦šŸ‡ŗgets to keep burning fossil fuels (and open new oil and gas projects) but pretend its tackling climate change by supporting šŸ‡µšŸ‡¬ to sell it cheap carbon credits so it can claim its offsetting fossil fuel emission.

Andrea Babon It's not right 😠We need to develop as well, our people need development, we cannot be like this for next 40 yrs! This was my view from the beginning - you take our carbon offset, you trade your emissions & continue your development but for us, we are tied down with no process.

I wonder how PNG will address "double counting" in its carbon credits/offsets when participating in numerous REDD+ programs, we have VCS, IPCOS, Art (Tree), CfRN scheme, & GCF RBP. No clear framework on this - Does the National, Provincial, District & LOs aware & understand this?

Australian man behind attempt to log 'precious relic' of Solomon Islands rainforest "The economy, the whole legal structure of logging, timber rights, is set up in favour of extractive logging companies and people find it very hard to protect their land" abc.net.au/news/2023-05-1…

"Any offset, whether ā€œvoluntaryā€ or ā€œsovereignā€, exists to allow Big Polluters to continue polluting. While protecting rainforests...is clearly important, if the mechanism for doing so allows continued burning of fossil fuels then it’s a Faustian bargain" reddmonitor.substack.com/p/a-question-f…

Yes I agree, we need coverage on this issue within the Pacific. So many fake experts & carbon cowboys roaming our shores trying make deals in dubious manner. It's people's resources & we need to have some respect for the LOs as well.

And PNG? the PNG NDC Implantation Plan is collecting dust as we speak, sad but true! No one seems to care or know how to implement PNG's NDC Implementation Plan - this plan attracts international funding support. If you can't perform then be sacked, simple and straight forward!

Two important recent papers go hand in hand. The first shows that forest-based carbon offsets are not working. The authors seems to suggest ways to fix them, but after 35 years of failures, maybe its time to move on. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Forrest Fleischman (@forrestfleisch1) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The second shows that there are lots of policy tools that are effective at slowing, halting, and reversing deforestation. Offsets aren't on the list, but there's alot of diversity in what works. Let's focus on what works! journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.108…

I hope ⁦Verra - Standards for a Sustainable Future⁩ accept the findings of this study now it's been published in ⁦Science Magazine⁩ 😳Their refusal to accept the findings earlier this year did not engender confidence in their role as a standards setter for carbon offsets science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Was asked to make payment (bribe) to run story to rebut recent paid media by corrupt government officials. Isn't the media supposed to have some integrity & work ethics when reporting their news? How come you ask for bribery when you know I just expose corruption?

The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was, in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.

Hottest July, August and September on record. You know what else is breaking records? Global fossil fuel consumption. Governments are the biggest producers and consumers of fossil fuels. That's why we're at 1.8 degrees over pre-industrial temperatures when they promised 1.5.
