Believe it or not, it actually got much worse before it got better. By 1964, 74% of respondents thought mass protests hurt the cause.

In 1966, 63% of Americans had an unfavorable view of MLK.

By 2011? Only 4%.

A 🧵about the “outside agitator' trope, inspired by our book SOLIDARITY, which looks at why “outsiders” are so threatening & so vital.

Outside support matters to movements. Not everyone denounced as an outside agitator is an outsider. But outside agitators are good, actually.

Just to take stock of where we're at: in coalition with the right, a Democratic president is backing a violent crackdown on freedom of speech that will split the coalition that narrowly elected him in support of another state's right to kill and destroy with total impunity.

Students, faculty, and staff The New School have voted for divestment from 13 companies implicated in Israel's offensive in Gaza!

The margins in faculty votes at SPE, Parsons, Lang, and NSSR are overwhelming, with support ranging between 80-90 percent.

I'm sorry, the person people are citing as an outside agitator at Columbia is Lisa Fithian. Shouldn't Columbia administration be proud that students called in one of the most brilliant leftist tacticians of the past 50 years for advice? Seems like a very Ivy League thing to do.

This is exactly what’s making any normal observer feel insane.
A pro-Israel mob attacked these kids with slurs, fists, mace, and fireworks. Police watched for HOURS & did nothing.
A day later, police instead bombard *them* with rubber bullets & flashbangs.
(All in a “blue” state)

So the most salient example of physical violence against persons—resulting in 25 people hospitalized—was caused by pro Israeli thugs, observed and denounced by Jewish professors. This doesn’t evoke “Europe in the 1930s” as Dana Bash has it—but rather Peekskill, NY 1949.
