….they can still relate to them, but they can’t relate to us severely ill people—they won’t let themselves—because that’s too terrifying. Our lives are too shriveled, too alien, and so their empathy taps out at a certain point. They’d never admit this, but…. (2/3)

…. severely sick & disabled people are less human in their minds, subconsciously anyway, than our caregivers are. It takes bravery to empathize with someone whose life is so crippled, and put themselves in our shoes. And most people can’t do this. (3/3)
