It was good to visit Darras Hall Primary School and Cardinal Hume Catholic School with the Education Secretary Damian Hinds to discuss #OpportunityNorthEast I look forward to seeing the opportunities it brings for young people

"As a STEM Ambassador, I go to schools and talk about engineering. We have a lot of young people visiting so they can see the reality and we have many women on site (and it helps to encourage young women to get into the industry)". Great article The Guardian ow.ly/2Ji130m9BMy

HMCI: For some time, Ofsted hasn’t placed enough emphasis on the curriculum. For a long time, our inspections have looked hardest at outcomes, placing too much weight on test and exam results when we consider the overall effectiveness of schools #SNEsummit18

HMCI: Ofsted will challenge schools where too much time is spent on preparation for tests at the expense of teaching, where pupil’s choices are narrowed, or where children are pushed into less rigorous qualifications purely to boost league table positions #SNEsummit18

It’s brilliant to see the North East at the centre of the education debate for really positive reasons today. Warm response from c.500 Heads at #SNESummit18 to Amanda Spielman speech on changes to the inspection regime. They sent msg that proof will be in its implementation

My Y7 advisory group have sent all of their teachers thank you cards this week during #kindnessweek to tell them what they are thankful for since joining in September. I was so blown away by their wonderful comments, I wrote them all one back! #bekind

Wonderful to host 16 dedicated and inspirational leaders from @Ambition_SL at South Shields School - it was a privilege to share our school improvement journey with you. #therealsouthshieldsschoolstory

Spent a genuinely brilliant morning at South Shields School with the amazing allie denholm, her inspirational staff, and the lovely students. The fact it faces closure is frankly ridiculous. The absolute definition of a brilliant community school. Keep fighting, you’re exceptional.

“The home is the hardest but most important place for education to focus on.” More than half of gaps in achievement at age 11 are due to inequality that was present at age five - it's great to hear Damian Hinds raising the importance of the home learning environment #HLEsummit

2/2 if you want to see a long-term and sustainable shift in outcomes for children in deprived areas, start with poverty. To compare a gap in outcomes between different schools in completely different circumstances across a region or nationally is naïve in the extreme.
