The test launch marks a significant step in URI's contribution to the Deepwater Horizon Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities restoration projects, a collaboration led by NOAA and US Department of the Interior, aiming to restore deep-sea coral habitats impacted by the 2010 oil spill.

Led by URI Graduate School of Oceanography coral reef specialist Andrew Davies, the team has deployed two landers off the NOAA Ship #NancyFoster for a week-long test before their year-long journey on the ocean floor.

Making their way from the Bay Campus to the Gulf Coast, a fleet of deep-sea landers have been launched for initial tests, marking the start of their underwater mission to better understand how corals respond to disturbances, changing seasons, & food supplies. (🎥: Inner Space Center)
