: the announcement that the ‘one word judgement’ will stay half way through Ofsted’s valuable ‘Big Listen’ is a cynical move from the Education Secretary, cutting the consultation off before it concludes and undermining the positive work of the new Chief Inspector!

There’s simply no need for the ‘one word judgement’ in Ofsted inspections! During inspections, 4 areas of school life are assessed; the one word judgement masks this richer picture and places an intolerable pressure on teachers and Heads, with the latter quitting in droves!

Excellent piece from Jonny Uttley 🇺🇦 in Schools Week, outlining the need for what I describe as policy and practice and what Shonogh Pilgrim FRSA FCCT of Whole Education terms : Together, we can build the inclusive system we all want schoolsweek.co.uk/together-we-ca…

This is so, so important; my research for and is clear: for all of the (understandable) focus on curriculum catch-up, the pandemic primarily exposed the vital SOCIAL (and socialisation) function of schooling! Social catch-up is so much harder!

If you were advising an incoming progressive government on 5 educational policies that it should retain (or return to), and 5 new initiatives that it should launch, what would they be? And why? I’m not just thinking about schools! FE, HE, early years, adult ed, vocational ed?

At present, I’m drafting a chapter assessing the course of educational research, policy and practice over the past decade - one of the initiatives marking fifty years of BERA; what would your highlights (and lowlights) be? And what pieces of research are key to this story?

A child who enjoys security is free to come to school in search of learning. A child who lacks that security, for whatever reason, comes to school first and foremost in search of comfort.

Unbelievably short sighted move from a government presiding over a chronic teacher recruitment crisis. theguardian.com/education/2024…

From today’s Observer: this year 10 out of 17 secondary subjects are l likely to under-recruit, with secondary reaching 61% of the official target and primary reaching 83%. Given the accompanying retention crisis, one can only conclude that Department for Education is asleep at the wheel

'...we appear to be stuck with single-phrase judgements in the short term, and not for any good reason, but because the government is so wedded to the way it uses inspection outcomes rather than the system itself being fit for purpose,' says Pepe Di’Iasio in his Tes blog.

🧵‘Department for Education's refusal to accept that single word judgements should be scrapped will be met with dismay across the teaching profession. No school or college’s contribution to their community can be summed up in one word only.👇
