TOWARDS KYLE: 37262
'Dounreay' takes us ever closer to Kyle of Lochalsh one late August day in 1987. I think this was the morning departure, but can't be totally sure of that, or the exact location. Good times.

Blast from the Past! You can’t beat a bit of steam heat! Just two months prior to withdrawal due to multiple faults, ‘Peak’ 45048 (formerly ‘Royal Marines’) awaits departure from Birmingham New Street with 2F86 22:20 to Leicester on this day, April 13, 1985. 📷 Roger King.

British Rail blue doing its thing on 47270 ‘Swift’, seen here in north Lincolnshire on its way back to Immingham over 30 years ago. The loco survives today as part of the West Coast fleet. (2nd Photo captured at York in 2021.)

When Scotland sent south towards Manchester and Crewe their best commuter trains. Oh my. The original ‘Blue Trains’ that transformed the network around Glasgow.

MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: CLASS 100
I think this was the last class Gloucester class 100 vehicle in operation. It ran for a while in 1987/88 with a class 105 counterpart. Here it is ready for departure with a service out along the Eastern lines. Don't think this one survives?

MANCHESTER VICTORIA: 47503
Another gloomy Manchester scene. 'The Geordie' pauses with Newcastle-Liverpool service circa 1987. I would have been disappointed with 503, most likely hoping for a generator.

Now that brings back memories of my early career days at Motherwell station on the YTS.
Flinging open the doors of a MK1 brake van and loading or unloading those brutes full of parcels .. happy days and a good free workout lol 😂

With a Hawksworth tender & express behind, 5040 Stokesay Castle, a stalwart of The Common, is framed quite nicely in a 1953 vignette of Thingley. In its final years reallocation would see it stored at 82B St Philips Marsh Shed for 20 months before withdrawal on 28 October 1963.
