Pausing outside its homeshed of Haymarket, J83 68481 is shot by J. Robertson in apple green in 1949. One of 6 painted in it for Waverley pilot duties (Though only 4 needed!) at Cowlairs, 68481 later wore lined black while in Edinburgh, being withdrawn here on 12th February 1962.

Looking resplendent in post-war Garter Blue, A4 60033 Seagull powers out of Kings Cross in 1949, photographed by J. F. Aylard. Built with a Kylchap, Seagull had covered for Mallard after its failure during the 1948 Locomotive Exchange Trials, providing admirable power & economy.

Making quite a stunning sight at Kittybrewster Shed in 1948, B12/1 1543 is shot by Jim M. Jarvis with pre-war shaded transfers & even more striking, its tender painted in GE style! Sent up north just before WW2, 1543 was withdrawn here 19 June 1953; the last unrebuilt Beardmore.

Still with a year or so to wait before renumbering, Worsdell J25 5656 shunts at Coxwald in 1948. One of 40 lent to the GWR from 1940 to 1946 to cover requisitioned Dean Goods, 5656's state reflects that varied career. It was withdrawn from 52A Gateshead Shed on 14th August 1959.

Evidently 'on the boil', Holden E4 2784 stands at Marks Tey with a clerestory likely just as old as it in May 1949. Evidence of its earlier days on NE metals can be seen with its side window cab from its days on the Darlington-Penrith line - protection from the Stainmore winters!

Prior to the Austerities, the Jinty was the WD standard shunter with 8 sent to France in 1940. Lost after Dunkirk, they were thought all destroyed though Jarvis was sent on their trail after returning with his 8Fs. 5 were repatriated, though 7613 survived in Berlin until 1953.

With the war over, September 1947 saw Ron Jarvis sent to Jaffa & Suez to assess how many 8Fs were worth bringing home, 39 total brought back following overhaul. The first shipment of 20 was done in April 1948 aboard the SS Belnor - the initial hoist of 70 tons causing a 11° list!

Looking not dissimilar from when it left Swindon in 1922, Star 4062 Malmesbury Abbey is shot by T. B. Owen lined out in Brunswick at Swindon Works on 27th April 1952. Its life extended by yet another overhaul, 4062 would be withdrawn from 82C Swindon Shed on 5th November 1956.

Departing from Birmingham Snow Hill with an express for Paddington, 6000 6014 King Henry VII is shot by E. Hunt in June 1952. Only repainted to Brunswick in January 1954, 6014 would wear it for only 8 years before being withdrawn on 21 September 1962 from 84A Stafford Road Shed.

Passing under the iconic balustrade walls of Bath Sydney Gardens, 6959 6983 Otterington Hall is shot by Pursey C. Short on a Down Extra consisting of Blood & Custard GWR stock in September 1952. 6983 would be withdrawn 25 August 1965 from 81F Oxford Shed after 17 years' service.

With the GWR lettering that it'd carry until withdrawal, Dean Goods 2516 sits on shed at Oswestry in 1952. Withdrawn there 31 May 1956 having racked up 1,433,934 miles of service over 59 years, it'd spend many years rusting away among inmates of Swindon Dump before restoration.

Still waiting to be granted a Cycling Lion emblem, 4073 5028 Llantilio Castle sets off from Chippenham in 1950. Working out of 83D Laira Shed in latter years, 5028 was the first GWR engine written off since the war following a collision with a failed Warship on 16 December 1959.

Built for the fisheries, the St Combs Branch was unfenced without turntables: necessitating cowcatchers at both ends! GNoSR Manson 0-6-0Ts worked pre-grouping, then D51s for a short time before the stalwart F4s worked the line for 20 years: the final years done by a single Ivatt.

In 1927, Beames reorganized Crewe to repair engines in half the time it took; this wasn't the case for tenders, reliant on that delay. The Disposals Board came in aid, selling 75 RODs to the LMS at £340 per. The engines were sold to China & the tenders were refitted at £400 per!

A far cry from C. C. B. Herbert's Crewe shot a year prior, Coronation 46239 City of Chester leaves Rugby in 1951; the grimy state of its livery displaying the reason behind the short-lived nature of Express Blue. It would carry blue until August 1954, when repainted to Brunswick.

Over the rooftops of Preston, Camden Coronation 46237 City of Bristol looks quite at home at the head of a thirteen-coach express in 1952. Its casing removed in March 1947, 46237 was withdrawn from 12B Carlisle Upperby Shed on 12th September 1964 & sent to Arnott Young of Troon.

Having received Express Passenger Blue following a time in Ultramarine, Coronation 46231 Duchess of Atholl looks rather impressive aside a fellow Stanier workhorse in primer at Crewe in January 1951. Built non-streamlined, it was withdrawn 29 December 1962 from 27A Polmadie Shed.

With its Whitaker Tablet-Catcher Apparatus readily visible, 483 40509 sits with steam wisping from its valves at Templecombe Shed in 1952. Beginning life as a Class 2 in 1899, it was renewed 1912 & ended its days on the S&D - withdrawn 14 June 1957 from 71G Bath Green Park Shed.

Looking rather forlorn on an Upminster-Grays branch service, Johnson 1833 58062 trundles along LTSR metals in 1952. Having started life at Manningham 60 years prior, 58062's career would soon end - being withdrawn from 13A Plaistow Shed on 3rd March 1956 & sent to Derby Works.

Following the trials with of 461 with its Holcroft-derived conjugated valve gear, Gresley drew up a massive 0-8-0T with a boiler off the H2s. Amended by late 1919 with Gresley conjugated, sloping tanks, larger bunker & a BP of 180lb, it fell to the wayside in favor of more J23s.
