The purpose of Bearded Vulture's 'beard' has been a long-standing mystery, but new photographic analysis suggests a potential sensory function: bit.ly/4c6nSMg

Amazing to come across a pair of courting Bittern on the edge of the marsh. Watched as the male repeatedly boomed & a first for me to hear the female calling in response to the booming of the male. Listen with sound up BTO KOS #wetlands

Lapwing chick are precocial, able to feed themselves on hatching. The wet grassland & muddy rills provide a rich source of their preferred foods, earthworms, leatherjackets, insects & their larvae. Between hatching & fledgling, ≈ 30/7 they’re incredibly vulnerable to predation

Shocking comment from Tómas Gunnarsson just now: "In my transect counts in South Iceland in 1999, Dunlin was the most commonly encountered wader". Numbers had already dropped by 2013 and dropped a further 60% by 2024. More here wadertales.wordpress.com/2025/02/20/ice… #ornithology

One of the 7 Whimbrel feeding on the grazing marsh, breaking their journey from West Africa to their breeding grounds in Iceland. #WaderWednesday

Kerton Pit, near Lydd-on-sea has been gathering waders on the high tides lately. One of the Bar-tailed Godwits on the 1st May was colour ringed - it was ringed in November 2022 in Mauritania, over 3700km away! Giving us an idea of where some of the birds passing are coming from.

DUCKS: by now most ducks will have settled at potential breeding sites. So all records of scarce & rare breeding ducks, including Shoveler, Wigeon, Garganey, Pintail, Pochard and Red-breasted Merganser, should be submitted, with breeding evidence, to the relevant county recorder

We all know how small Temminck’s (and Little) Stints are but seeing one next to a Greenfinch really hammers it home. The third week of May is prime time for migrating Temminck’s around Oslo and there were 5 of my patch this morning.

Powerful message from James Rebanks - Elmley in 1970s was drained and farmed for arable crops. Government funded nature restoration at scale has recreated a lost landscape and the wonderful species tens of thousand of people enjoy each year. Long may it continue!
