As National Parks turn 75, a new report highlights only 6% of their land is recorded as being in good health for nature - with the Yorkshire Dales having less tree cover than York and waterways across these special places heavily polluted by sewage released from storm overflows.

When I was young this was a hillside on the edge of town- filled with brambles, meadow and trees; host to badger, fox, lark, sledging and teenage hideaways.

Now, the roads read as an epitaph to both wildlife and wild-life on an urban fringe.

If Conservatives MPs are upset about arbitrary decisions made by unelected individuals affecting the interests of everyone else in society, just wait until they find out about access in the English countryside.
