Researchers have compared the genomes of several hundred bird species and found further evidence that a specific protein in the birds' eyes is the magnetoreceptor which aids migration. rarebirdalert.co.uk/v2/Content/How…

Epic sea crossing alert! 🌊 KP has reached Ireland but rather than following a land-based route, he left northern Spain and set off across the Bay of Biscay then continued his flight over the sea. 😮 We’re pleased to say he’s made it! 🙌 National Parks and Wildlife Service

A smart Dotterel found by Craig this afternoon and our first Sedge Warbler of the year takes the islands year list to 141, it’s been a good couple of days, with more to come hopefully.

Some lovely wildlife in Woodland Trust Cymru’s Ceunant Llennyrch woods today. Also another bloody balloon. She may be your Little Princess but the balloon you bought her could kill wildlife & farm animals. Please stop buying this 🤬🤬🤬rubbish

A British Ringed Plover may 'migrate' less than a mile each year but some of its cousins leave NE Africa in April and might not arrive on Russian breeding sites until June:

All migration is pretty amazing, but some of the wader species do take it to another level! Fantastic read… I always love watching waders overhead, over the sea & onwards at this time of the year, special moments ❤️.

Sharing the magic of migration.
On this day in 2022 we stood at Eyrarbakki harbour in watching tired arrive in off the sea, having flown directly from West Africa.
I wrote about the experience here:

A lovely few hours with Mandy Myers wandering at Hoe Rough Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The first Green-winged Orchids up, a superb swarm of tiny Green Longhorn moths, a superb Blue Shieldbug + this very smart Cranefly - Euphylidorea dispar. A nice surprise was 4 Ravens low overhead!

A fantast boat trip from Macduff to Portsoy. These are 2 of 7 White-billed divers that we saw. Also 2 GND. We also saw an adult Iceland gull at the river mouth.

The counts are in! We're very pleased to announce that this year's Puffin number on Skomer Island is 41,605.

We're very pleased that the island remains a stronghold for this seabird species.

When I caught a Siskin in my Nofolk garden for BTO last month, it was carrying a lot of fat. I remember thinking that this bird is going to go somewhere far away but I never thought it would be in Germany 10 days later! @Wildbarley

When you see a flock of migrating , do you wonder how the birds know where to go or who travels with whom?

Doing ecological studies during a biodiversity crisis is difficult. In 2002 I began studying Marsh Tits in an ancient woodland to see how a functioning population worked. After 10 yrs I realised I was now documenting their slide towards local extinction:
