Still only April but it looks/feels like June in Poland. 27 Celsius today. Vegetation about a month ahead of ‘normal’. Meanwhile the Wood Warblers arrive at the same time, barely advancing their migration, to find the forests have raced ahead without them.

Good morning with a Golden Oriole leading the chorus (sound up!) with a Chiffchaff, Skylark and distant Cuckoo at the marvellously named Grabczok, on our search for Wood Warbler study plots in Poland.

Consequence of spring’s climate chaos in Central Europe, where a record early heatwave brought out the Oak leaves, then switch to cold/frost killed them all off, leading to a bare canopy of dead young leaves. What will it mean for caterpillars and the birds reliant on them?

Avian flu (H5N1) is a dangerous virus, but can’t spread among humans. Usual spread is bird 🐓 to human (rare) or bird to mammal. But now mammal to mammal transmission confirmed in cows 🐄. What does this mean & how is 🇺🇸 govt preparing? My latest column👇

A breeding bird survey in Thetford Forest in late April, and Firecrests outnumber the single Chaffinch. They should be one of the most abundant birds. Disappearing at alarming speed, linked to disease epidemics from the vast garden birdfeeding industry.
