#OnThisDay 1876: Sir Nigel Gresley was born. He was the designer of some of Britain's most iconic locomotives.

We are saddened by the news of the death of Sir William McAlpine. A true Railway enthusiast and his name will be forever synonymous with the rescue of #FlyingScotsman in 1973 and the establishment of the RailwayHeritageTrust. We send our condolences to his family and friends.

The pioneers and saviours of railway preservation may leave us, but their legacy will last forever. Their contributions to saving living history will be remembered. Always.
