Why is the Defra Secretary job seen as a demotion?
If the role / department was called the Department of Everything we Need to Stay Alive, *brackets* Food/Water/Air/Soil/Biodiversity/Climate, would it be seen as the most important job instead?

Thinking back to Sir David Attenborough's speech at

The govt's announcement today is an attack on the planet to play short-term political games. It's a desperate act that will cost jobs, push up bills, and destabilise the natural world

Rishi Sunak has no mandate for this

In votes just now, the House of Lords said NO to Government plans to…

❌Scrap rules
❌Give itself powers to further amend protections without proper security.

A massive thanks to the peers, orgs & people who have stood up for rivers & good policy making 🙏

A very welcome move from Angela Rayner 🌹
and Steve Reed The Labour Party - thank you.

We need new houses, of course we do.

But it's perfectly possible to build them in a way that doesn't mean yet more poo in our rivers.

And tomorrow the Government is going to try and pass a law in the House of Lords that will force local authorities to pretend 'nutrient' pollution (poo) doesn't exist

We really have reached a new low...

Dear BBC News (UK) could you please stop saying how pleased we all are with continuing dry, sunny & hot weather? Our rivers & wetlands are dying & wildlife fading away. We need RAIN. It is good. You can’t make the weather, but please stop saying global heating is a positive thing.
