Missed National Pet Day (why? all these Day things get on my nerves) yesterday. This is the best ever cartoon on the subject, by the late Tony Husband.

On Monday evening an all-female clergy team officiated at the Eucharist, we think for the first time in our history.

This happy happenstance was made more poignant as we were keeping the Feast of the Annunciation and celebrating the role of Mary in bringing Christ to the world.

In this wonderful 17th-century picture, a woman playing a lute, likely representing Harmony, sits under a flowering arch. She is surrounded by three large floral slips, a dog chasing a hare, a bird on a fruiting tree, smaller flowers and insects, and a grand castle

This is good - better than previous articles on the topic. Makes the point that things won't stop with cuts in the arts and humanities, since they often help fund more expensive STEM degrees. 1/2 newstatesman.com/comment/2024/0…

I’ll be away from Russia for a few days. A good moment to recall newspaper vendor Valentina’s story from 2021 about the only time she's been to the seaside.

ten years as an antiquarian, hearing nothing but 'my relative kept these untouched in a box their whole life but they died, and I don't want this stuff' has radicalized me. annotate the books. use the china. wear the clothes until they wear out. your life should not be a museum

A few people’ve asked about the impact of the Daily Mail’s wokesconegate, on sales of National Trust scones. The ‘scone per visitor’ trends in the 10 days following the news were:

Cheese (non-vegan) = no change
Fruit = no change
Plain = 15% increase

Victory to woke scones 🫡

While it's good that the media is now paying attention to this, it would have been helpful had they done something over two years ago when people like myself were being forced out of our jobs. Maybe then the Tories would not have had such a free hand to destroy UKHE.
