Join me and travel to Evett's Ham-Shop, Red Lion Passage, London, in 1815.

You can buy slices of ham between two crusts of bread & I may 'carry them away cool in a couple of cabbage leaves'.

Your ticket awaits: bit.ly/EatingOutRegen…

The Old English word for 'not' was 'ne'. This went directly before the verb and it was sometimes even glued to the front of the verb stem - 'ellided' in linguistic. terms. This created an unusual class of negative verbs in the language - for example /1

I did go wild with my tulip planting this year but I don’t regret it. :) There are homegrown tulips everywhere in the house.

Are you partial to a tulip?

I adore and the fact it returns every spring to be the flavour booster I'm after in various recipes. It is a particularly delicious addition to beef stew, which lends it a deep umami flavour along with the I use in our recipe. Great. Now I'm hungry.

I wish to time-travel to Georgian London where 'the hungry passenger of moderate fortune may live with convenience & elegance...not only eat & drink, but sleep, upon the most reasonable terms'.

Will you join me?

You may have a passion for historic cookery books AND money to spare. If so I can implore you to make your way to the Gavroche auction.

Also good to look at for those of us who are church mice poor :)

Everyone, Beyond the Streets is doing their Beyond Jack the Ripper tour again, which focuses on the victims' lives (not their deaths) and raises money for women in need.👇

Highly recommended. My writing classes with the Gentle Author were amazing so I can only imagine how good the tour will be.

The widow Jervis contemplates her possessions on the chimneypiece and writes in her commonplace book: Paraphernalia came to English via Medieval Latin, from Greek “parapherna,” meaning 'bride's property beyond her dowry' (from para-, meaning 'beyond,' and phernē, meaning 'dowry')
