Low carbon aficionado. I help the nuke sales people (and deniers) out when they make boo boos (they make a lot of boo boos).

Good morning with good news: Wind, solar & batteries will be 94% & nuclear 2% of US new grid capacity additions in 2024.

Gas plunges to 4% (2.5 GW) of new capacity, down from 21% in 2020, to its lowest level in 25 years!

Batteries jump to 23% (14 GW)!

Good morning with good news: Solar was a low ~18 cents/watt in May 2023 but has fallen to 10 cents/watt or less. Incredible!

Why is solar the fastest growing ever electricity generation source? Solar is lowest cost & keeps getting cheaper.

Cheap solar & cheap battery are here!

Climate damages are '6X LARGER than previously thought', says new NBER working paper

– every 1C wipes out 12% of global GDP
– every tonne of CO2 causes >$1,000 of damages

Gernot Wagner tells me: 'Assuming nobody finds a flaw in this paper, it is going to truly change things'

Good morning with good news: Wind & solar generated 45% of Texas's electricity in April 2024. Wow!

Nuclear produced 8%, making zero-CO2 power 53%!

Wind & solar generated more than gas. Solar produced ~12% and more than coal. Wonderful!

Obvious, but let's list why this is perfect:
1. Produces energy on-site straight for the EVs.
2. Uses no extra land and can provide tens of GW countrywide.
3. Prevents cars from heating up (shade).

Next time someone promotes those 'EV sales are collapsing, no one wants EVs' stories, tell them to read this: 'I Went To China And Drove A Dozen Electric Cars. Western Automakers Are Cooked.' Cheering on car companies' Kodak moment is as dumb as it gets.

Good Morning from Germany! Looks like things are picking up in the German industry, especially energy-intensive industries make up lost ground. DB just updated their prediction for manufacturing production in 2024. It's not as bad as they thought before, now expecting a decrease

2024 seems to be a breakthrough year for grid storage batteries.

The radical price drop means solar/wind coupled with batteries is the new normal.

Meanwhile California is showing how batteries will kill gas and reshape the grid. Europe especially has a lot of catching up here.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: President Biden is the most progressive president on domestic economic policy that we have ever had. Last night in his interview, he showed us that once again.

Let’s run through some of the major things that he and Democrats have accomplished.🧵

Brian Gitt No. Your graph does not include savings, only new spending, theoretically required based on models and many assumptions.

Does not include what would have been spent on fossils continuing business as usual.

This graph from the same report does compare 'avoided costs' compared

We're going to reach peak emissions from dirty fossil fuel electricity from this year: wind + solar are growing faster than any other sources of electricity in history, and can cover all the global increase in electricity demand

Incredible: In just April, 2,382 MW of solar & 1,215 MW of battery energy storage began operations on the ERCOT grid. Credit Doug Lewin

He also says another ~26,000 MW of solar & ~11,000 MW of batteries are in final stage of development.

Texas adds incredibly capacity!

The 'cost of intermittent renewables' is borne - by intermittent renewables.

Wind and solar get paid less per unit of energy because they don't get to choose when to produce.

A wind turbine gets paid less per MWh than a power plant producing constant output 24/7.

Amazing reduction in April fossil gas use on California's grid in just one year!

Due to increase in utility PV (increasing supply), rooftop PV (decreasing demand) and batteries (shifting PV supply from day to night)

Pendulum Flow Doing just fine.
“Several [15] coal-fired power plants that were still on the grid as a precautionary measure over the last two years are therefore now superfluous and can be taken off the grid for good.”

2024 has seen a big leap in the scale of battery operations in California

Battery storage charges during hours with plentiful solar and appears to be displacing natural gas during the morning and evening peaks

This is a clear step towards the grid that CAISO has been pursuing
