1.5°C isn’t a political target, but a physical limit. We’re set to exhaust the remaining carbon budget in just a few years. Yet policy assumes huge CO₂ removal later, instead of cutting fast now. 1st of 3 posts on Earth’s resilience & where we stand. linkedin.com/pulse/earth-lo…

Happy to be speaking at this year's #pint25 Pint of Science UK Come and learn from SEI Research University of York's peatland research: Former PhD student Abby Mycroft's 'from peat to pint' will be followed by me on 'facts vs fiction' on peatland heather management; pintofscience.co.uk/event/our-plan…

Some very good points made by The Heather Trust on burning/cutting or no management of heather. Purely to speculate on a vague and ill-considered concept of "rewetting" as proposed by Natural England etc. might quite literally lead to many of our peatlands going up in smoke.

Our latest study Heather Futures, led by David Jarrett, reveals a shocking loss: Every year, we’re losing heather moorland habitat equal in size to the city of Birmingham. Read and download the full report on our website: heathertrust.co.uk

Even worse to come I fear, as peat depths are often measured using metal rods. Unfortunately, those rods easily push into the soft soil deposit often found underneath peat. The peat depth is therefore often over estimated. Even happens to experts but AI does not correct this!

Peat! And it’s mapping… UPDATE: There is no update Yeah It’s still online, it’s still very badly wrong & I still haven’t heard a peep from anyone official about when it’s getting taken offline! Ah well, I guess for Natural England massive mistakes are just the way they roll!

This important paper passed under the media radar. It analyses a key indicator of the stability of the Atlantic ocean circulation #AMOC, in measured ocean data. It finds that most climate models get this wrong, and thus have an #AMOC that is too stable. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

I cannot see any positive outlook for the UK. Very frustrating to see AI being pushed with no clear impact assessment / regulation beforehand. Crazy! Number of new UK entry-level jobs has dived since ChatGPT launch – research theguardian.com/business/2025/…

Landmark ruling in the Advisory Opinion by the ICJ on Climate Change. 1.5 degree C is legally the Planetary limit. All countries are legally obliged to comply. Even fossil-fuel subsidies can be illegal. States have duty to solve the planet crisis and can be held accountable.

Very happy about this new paper from our University of York SEI Research PeatTeam 🤠: rdcu.be/ezhzt Ever wondered how peatland carbon fluxes are limited under dark/foggy conditions 🌫️- do they provide robust light response models? Shining a light (LED) helps ! 🔦
