The French Boirault Machine was an experimental Landship or Tank. In an Aug 1916 demonstration, an observer noted that it moved about 1 km/h, managed to flatten a line of barbed wire, and crossed trenches that were 1.8 m wide but had trouble steering. x.com/ThisDayInWWI/s…

Today in 1915 a German Zeppelin dropped a bomb on Batholomew’s Close & revealed this: The gatehouse of St Bartholomew's Church. A Tudor building that miraculously survived the Great Fire but been clad in the 18thC. The cladding was blasted off to reveal the 16th Century building.

Did you know that the 13,000 Native Americans that fought in World War I were not even U.S. citizens? Natives were not granted citizenship (of our own country) — until June 2, 1924. You would’ve known this. Had they taught it to you in school.

#OnThisDay 1914: Belgian troops defeated a German cavalry force west of Halen. The battle was a tactical victory for the Belgians, but did little to delay the German advance through the country. Still, it's often considered the first allied victory of the First World War.
