The societal taboo is the excess of particularity which eventually degenerates into vice. It is taboo because to address it risks the whole society.

I think a lot of the excess body phobia of Christianity would have been avoided if when we heard “sensuality” in the pejorative we did not simplify it but remained open to this also encompassing the detached particularity divorced from intelligibility and union with God
