A dry evening after a day of rain. Atmospheric walk In the low evening light at least 140 House Martins, 100 Sand Martins and 50 Swallows were feeding low over the Water Buffalo. The sun was setting over Cardigan as a Great Crested Grebe floated into view.

Tomorrow sees the arrival of our first guests of 2024. The rooms are looking great and the Island is awash with seabirds and migrants. We still have a couple of rooms vacant for this Puffin season:

A misty, cool start to the day on the Teifi Marshes. Sedge, Reed and Grasshopper Warblers in increasing numbers adding variety to the dawn chorus. Amongst the Sedge Warblers caught, one had a French ring BTO

A Squacco Heron just flew from the Well to South Pond. The first for Skokholm and a cracking find by Emmanuel Jatta 🇬🇲, ably assisted by Richard Dobbins (they promise they didn't bring it over from Gambia).

We have finished work on Petrel Station II (the doors will be added before the Storm Petrels return next April). If occupied at the same rate as the original, then in a century & a half we should have 148 breeding pairs in addition to the 30 or so currently nesting around the Obs

The clouds nearly cleared enough at Mwnt to see . Worth the effort though as the wind had dropped and it was a pleasant evening for a walk anyway. Bonus was watching a Chough displaying and a Wheatear.

First Sedge Warbler, Teifi Marshes, this morning, singing from a patch of riverside reed near the bypass bidge. Paths flooded at high tide with a lot of water coming down the Teifi

We currently have the privilege of hosting Emmanuel Jatta 🇬🇲 from the brilliant Kartong Bird Observatory 🇬🇲 for a few weeks of training and exchanging ideas. Today was helping Ian Beggs with his Wheatear work, although the female Stonechat and Rock Pipits made up the non-heligoland catch

You'd be forgiven for thinking that we'd given up on the Skokholm twitter account, but we're back, fresh from an amazing trip to the Gambia. The last few days were spent getting ready for our return to Dream Island. The forecast for tomorrow is set fair, so we should soon be home
