In the worried wealthy well : CAC probably is a net harm because it can lead to an unstoppable cascade. (Ala Michael Jackson, you can always find some physician to do what you want )

Some people adore them—some even prefer them to the actual text—but central illustrations, to me, are becoming increasingly cryptic, full of clichés and mannerisms. They’re supposed to capture the essence of a paper, yet they often look hastily assembled just because the journal

Agree with Davide Capodanno: it’s time to reevaluate the role and need for central illustrations. Most don’t go through peer or design review, so it can be the paper’s weakest link.

Useful (accurate, understandable) graphical abstracts are uncommon They are a low value burden on authors They worsen understanding & proper use of the scientific literature - promote narrative over nuance Time to drop them!

John Mandrola, MD (@drjohnm) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I could not agree more. Central illustrations, infographics, are dumb. As are minutes long video summaries, no matter the quality. Manuscripts are nuanced and meant to be read carefully. 👆How can you practice EBM if you can’t appraise the evidence?

The thornier issue IMO is when humans will be willing to cede power of allocating attention and resources to machines or even give significant deference to the machines scoring instead of power dynamics, personal taste, etc!

Good! Donor preferences should also be toast - why are we giving tax exemptions if donations come with something of significsnt value in return? wsj.com/us-news/educat…

Interested in hearing details of this case, but cases similar to this highlight danger of “just getting additional datapoints” in the worried well. Cc DoctorTro

Can we please stop the practice of clapping in the middle of every LBCT? It makes sense for something like COAPT, with so much effort and surprisingly/strikingly positive results. Meeting a NI endpoint with a wide margin shouldn’t cause eruption in applause. Just clap at the end.

Why would anyone pursue gene therapy in a person in his 80s for a disease where there are safe and effective alternatives? * oral pills which stabilize disease * RNA infusions which turn off problematic TTR gene * soon antibodies which remove problematic TTR protein

Anish Koka, MD (@anish_koka) 's Twitter Profile Photo

“The problem isn’t the gene.....it’s the delivery. A lipid nanoparticle hauling Cas9 through the liver is immunology’s version of playing with fire.” Some are a little too cavalier about LNPs.
