June 11th is National Corn on the Cob Day. Crows are omnivores and their diet is quite varied, but corn is definitely a favorite, especially sweet corn. They will eat corn at any stage of growth, from freshly planted seeds to fully developed ears.

Pelicans have the largest bill of all birds. It can reach 18 inches in length. Underneath the bill, pelicans have a throat pouch than can hold three gallons of water. This pouch, contrary to the popular belief, does not hold food.

Fact: Some birds can sleep while flying, through a process called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, where half of the brain rests while the other stays alert. This allows them to stay vigilant for predators or weather conditions while still resting during long migratory flights.

The Griffon vulture is the highest-flying bird, reaching altitudes of 37,000 feet. This was recorded when one struck an airplane at that height over Côte d'Ivoire. They have a specialized blood protein that allows them to efficiently extract oxygen from the thin air miles high.

Not good with faces? Pigeons are, and it’s faces in particular that they recognize. Pigeons possess a shrewd intelligence, and even with different clothes, pigeons are able to recognize particular faces and use this ability to stay away from people who aren’t especially friendly.

Turkey vultures have the best sense of smell among birds. They can smell and locate carrion (decaying flesh) from over a mile away. This also helps them detect natural gas leaks. Gas companies add ethyl mercaptan, the same compound found in decaying flesh, attracts vultures.

Think you've had a bad hair day? Check out this boat-tailed grackle. Grackles fully molt and replace their feathers each year, after mating season. This helps them keep their plumage in good condition for insulation, waterproofing, and flight. 📸: Norman Welsh

A microburst is a powerful, localized column of sinking air that can kill migrating birds with sudden, violent downdrafts and strong, erratic winds. These extreme weather events have been known to cause mass bird deaths in multiple documented cases.

Most Pelicans don't divebomb their prey; they scoop it up while treading along the water surface. To increase their chances, they will occasionally form cooperative hunting parties called "fish drives" where they herd schools of fish into shallow water or tight circles.

Pigeons can fly at speeds of around 50-60 mph, but racing pigeons are known to reach up to 90-95 mph. While 60 mph is a common average speed, particularly over longer distances, their top speeds are achieved for short bursts and are influenced by training, wind, and distance
