"We need to stand back and work out what has happened over the last 20 years where the number of people in prison has doubled. And we need to look at, are we spending the resources properly?" - Lord Thomas.

"As prisons are so overcrowded people are not getting the rehabiliative or mental health treatment they need. We cannot go on as we are. The government's decision today to think about sending prisoners to Estonia is further evidence of the crisis we're facing." - Lord Thomas.

"The deterrent of a long prisons sentence, there's very little evidence for. Obviously it punishes people, but it doesn't actually help society as a whole. So we say look again at the sentencing regime we have and where it needs adjusting." - Lord Thomas.

One day, there'll be an inquiry into the lives destroyed by global warming. There'll be echos with #Grenfell, I suspect: warnings by experts and calls for action by those affected ignored, undue influence by vested interests leading to lack of regulation, diffuse accountability.

I'd missed this astonishing Tory leadership rule. The ability to extract huge sums from party benefactors tells us nothing about the candidates' ability to be prime minister or leader of the opposition. But it ensures they'll begin their leadership in thrall to wealthy donors.

There are around 880,000 people who could claim Pension Credit but don’t. If you know any older person who may be worried about their finances-encourage them to check using our Age UK checker.

Cameron’s blatant distortion of the inquiry findings about his bonfire of the regulations on #Grenfell is troubling. Is he in denial or is this just another example of the last govt’s poor relationship with the truth, integrity and accountability. theguardian.com/uk-news/articl…

Starmer said prevention is part of NHS reform on #BBCLauraK but this needs upfront investment in prevention, not just on NHS but elsewhere. As part of this, I hope they’ll amend the debt fiscal rule to allow for more investment, because that will bring long term growth and gains

This tweet, now deleted, is a frustrating little fragment. It shows our then PM meeting a uranium executive - an encounter apparently not recorded in his official diary. Who introduced them, I wonder? The executive worked for @amiradnani, now Johnson's co-chair in a "consultancy"

BOB37702515 has 210 followers and a blue tick. And has tweeted 3.5k times. That’s quite a high cost- per-follower. BOB37702515 must be the sort of UK citizen who really cares about heritage and the National Trust. No really.

Voter suppression: as many as 750k voters may not have voted last time, affecting disproportionately younger and disadvantaged people. What Rees-Mogg openly called gerrymandering needs to stop, with widening ID eligibility a bare minimum response. theguardian.com/politics/artic…

I notice BBC Radio 4 Today is still referring to ‘illegal’ not ‘irregular migration’. The last govt made it illegal in domestic law, but it’s not illegal in international law to claim asylum and the new govt now processes claims. It’s esp important to defend that right given the riots

By the end the desperate Sunak regime was as reckless as its predecessors…unfunded tax cuts, spending pledges with no means to pay for them, illegal Rwanda plan, crammed prisons with no policy to deal with them etc, etc:

Reform or die, Starmer will say, promising major surgery. More prevention and community based care are important but the NHS is sick of top down prescriptions that don’t work, so I hope they will listen to and bring NHS staff with them, rather than just dictate as in the past.
