Just gave a talk at the INAF Osservatorio Astrofisico in Florence on our new paper disputing the "Hard Steps" model for the evolution of intelligence. Lesson: Astrobiology needs deep conversations with domain experts. arxiv.org/abs/2408.10293 Astrowright

Here is my conversation with Lex Fridman on astrobiology, the human future, the physics of life, the nature of consciousness and why The Expanse was the greatest Sci-fi show ever. It really was big fun!

Just Google “how complete is the fossil record“ and the answer will be right there. The fossil record is quite incomplete. Most things do not get fossilized. Read the paper by Gavin Schmidt and myself for more details. There is more work to be done here, however for sure.

New EXCELLENT Astrobiology textbook by Lingam and Balbi. Aimed at upper undergrads (or anyone with some math and science training) it is destined to become a standard for the field. I want to teach a course at the UR with it. Amedeo Balbi

My @BigThink piece on the future of the nation-state under the pressures of the Anthropocene. Ideas taken from Berggruen Institute and Noema Magazine and the Planetary Summit in Venice. bigthink.com/the-present/is…

This was such a fun conversation with Mayim Bialik. I really enjoyed getting to talk about so many topics in Astrobiology and science (and why most UAP stuff is dubious at best 😀)

New paper with 李开诚 Lukáš Likavčan! "The Planetary and Its Uses. Grounding Political Economy in an Astrobiological Perspective" The project combined 2 very different disciplines find 1 path through the anthropocene towards a mature technosphere. osf.io/preprints/soca…

If you are interested in consciousness and have not gotten Annaka Harris Light's On you are missing out. Lots of VERY interesting conversations on what is and what is not that strange feeling of "what its like to be..."
