They make the perfect subject for low-key photography. Taken in bright sunlight, underexposing the shot to make the dark areas completely black.

We heard lots of booming bitterns over the weekend in the reedbeds. Great time to head out and listen for them. Sounds like someone bottle-blowing.

This is how the water quality of a chalk stream should look like, gin clear. Starwort carpeting the river floor, you can hardly see a ripple. This was taken on the river Hun in Norfolk.

Temporary ponds created by floods can provide new habitats for aquatic and semi-aquatic species. They also play a role in nutrient cycling by trapping sediment and organic matter carried by floodwaters.

This small pond was formed recently after the floodwater had dropped.

Little owl on the lookout for prey. It was perched on an electricity wire, which didn't give me much to work with. So I silhouetted it against the sky, to create this simple image.

River restoration on the river Wensum with Norfolk Rivers Trust & Environment Agency

* 8 hectares of the floodplain were restored
* 4 shallow ponds
* 2 pools
* Sediment trap
* 1100 meters of channel were created
* Improved water quality
* Reduced flood risk
