A rise in school absence is a global challenge since the pandemic; countries around the world are grappling with it.
Fantastic to see our attendance strategy in England, and schools’ great work, recognised in today's OECD ➡️ Better Policies for Better Lives report 👇

Why this matters - because most academies are in families of schools, or multi-academy trusts. This gives more resilience, more career opportunities for teachers, and more expertise to support our most challenging schools. ⬇️

We’re really proud that today’s OECD ➡️ Better Policies for Better Lives report has recognised our wide ranging and comprehensive strategy to tackle school absences.

This is testament to the work being done in schools across England, helping every child to reach their full potential ⬇️

In 2010, only around 200 schools were academies.

Now, that number is over 10,800 - at over half of our state schools.

What has this meant?

Higher standards across our schools, contributing to over 90% of schools now being rated good or outstanding, up from 68% in 2010.

Our faith schools are some of the best performing in the country.

But the cap on them admitting over 50% of pupils based on faith has prevented them from growing.

That’s why we’re lifting this cap to enable more pupils to benefit from the high standards faith schools bring.

I am disturbed to hear about the incident at Birley Academy where a teenager has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

We're in touch with the school and my thoughts are with those injured and all the school community affected by this frightening situation.

I am shocked and saddened that a 13 year old boy has died this morning following the disturbing incident in Hainault.

My thoughts are with the family, the school community, and all those affected.

Thank you to the brave emergency services who responded on the scene.

Our 9 and 10-year-olds are now the 4th best readers in the world.
