Late post, but had an amazing learning session with Dr. Ruth Beatty π on progression from patterning to algebra. Easy strategies that can be used from elementary to high school!
Took the From Patterns to Algebra learning from Dr. Ruth Beatty π to Emery CI gr9 math. We moved away from additive thinking to multiplicative thinking w/ Guess My Rule, analyzing ‘groups of’, # of tiles, position#➡️creating equations➡️graphing Jason To is chillin’ on BlueSky (@mrjasonto.com) Lisa Dilworth Liz Holder
Such a great feeling when a scaffolded Thin Slice activity comes together nicely! C.W. Jefferys C.I. gr 9 students were able to learn how to determine the slope&y-intercept from a graph, determine the equation AND graph a linear equation in 1 period. Small Group Instruction happening at NorthviewHeightsSS . While the teacher is working with students in targeted & guided math instruction, other students are working on deliberate practice at math stations. Jason To is chillin’ on BlueSky (@mrjasonto.com) Mervi Salo Lisa Dilworth Liz Holder
Numeracy students at Westview Centennial SS were able to solve one step all the way to multi step equations in one period w/algebra tiles! Started with concrete ➡️ representational. Will be moving towards abstract. But a great start so far! Jason To is chillin’ on BlueSky (@mrjasonto.com) Liz Holder Lisa Dilworth Mervi Salo
Class data on screen time & # of apps on phone at NorthviewHeightsSS . Students represent & analyze data graphically & numerically w/ box plot. Follow up activity, create scatter plot w/ both variables determine correlation. Jason To is chillin’ on BlueSky (@mrjasonto.com) Liz Holder Lisa Dilworth Mervi Salo
Using mini whiteboards is a great way to carry out quick formative assessments as seen here with our math partner teacher Downsview Secondary & allows for students to think-pair-share. Jason To is chillin’ on BlueSky (@mrjasonto.com) Liz Holder Lisa Dilworth Mervi Salo
Day 1 of Shaping Algebraic Reasoning allowed teachers to engage and play in the math. We built patterns with tiles and saw how this can help our students see the multiplier&constant, determine equations and make predictions. When the correct answer isn’t 22, but I wouldn’t have known that if I didn’t use the mini whiteboards a a tool for assessment. This helped my partner teacher & I know that this was a question we needed to take up with the class. Jason To is chillin’ on BlueSky (@mrjasonto.com) Liz Holder Lisa Dilworth Mervi Salo
Analyzing Westview Centennial SS gr 9 math student exit ticket & grouping them for targeted math instruction the next day. We were able to move students forward within a few minutes of small group instruction & collect data. Thin sliced activity on unit rates and proportion happening Westview Centennial SS . Being able to see students collaborating and engaged & hearing the math conversations is so great 🤩 Jason To is chillin’ on BlueSky (@mrjasonto.com) Liz Holder Lisa Dilworth Mervi Salo Brandon Zoras
Awesome gr9 Ss solves 2x+3=x+1 w/ algebra tiles. Day before we used tiles to add&subtract polynomials. Then a bit of direct instruction for solving equations & off they went! I didn’t even do an example for multi step&they figured it out themselves. Liz Holder Lisa Dilworth
The importance of collecting ongoing data w/ formative assessments. We were keeping our eye out on these students, taught them algebra with algebra tiles &were able to move them forward. Still have more work to do but happy to see these students succeed.🤩 Lisa Dilworth Liz Holder
Had a great time w/secondary math teachers at Northview Heights talking algebra tiles, formative assessments, small group instruction, tracking student data, polypad&desmos. Grateful for the support from admin & dept in continuing professional development.Lisa Dilworth Liz Holder
Implementing our “Shaping Algebraic Reasoning” PD with our Math Learning Partner schools & teachers. As we enter our linear relations unit, gr 9 students are building patterns➡️equations➡️graphs. Liz Holder Lisa Dilworth
Analyzing students' answers on EQAO sample questions from a google form to determine any common misconceptions & to help create small group instruction to work on specific topics with certain students or with the whole class. Liz Holder Lisa Dilworth
