September 1, 1914 – Richard Norris “Dick” Williams, a survivor of the sinking of the Titanic, upsets Maurice McLoughlin 6-3, 8-6, 10-8 to win the modern-day US Open Tennis in Newport, R.I., the last time the event is held at the site that is now the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The The New York Times called the Dick Williams upset of Maurice McLoughlin in the 1914 men's singles final of the modern-day US Open Tennis final played on September 1, 1914 “one of the great surprises of the age.”
June 24, 1913: Dick Williams, 14 months after surviving the sinking of The Titanic, makes his Wimbledon debut, beating RMK Turnbull of Britain 61 64 63. “He scarcely missed a chance,” wrote the The New York Times of Williams. “His backhand drives were a feature of great strength."
