This Roman bronze figure of Jupiter was found in #Hungary & is now in British Museum The detailing of the face is exquisite & is thought to have inspired the design for the 1896 Olympics winner medals (pictured). This statue dates to the 1st-2nd century AD and is 17.7 cm high.

Exciting discovery The Govan Stones 🛡👑 over the weekend led by UofG's Prof Stephen Driscoll & Clyde Archaeology revealed a remarkable early medieval carved stone of a warrior figure, unlike any others found at the site, known for its Viking-age sculptures. Learn more ➡️ gla.ac/3EJH1nm
Our own Annemarie Franz spotted an interesting parallel between this stone from Burghead, held at National Museums Scotland, and the Govan Warrior. Note the pointed beard, long hair, and most importantly, small, round shield held on shoulder straps on the left side of the body.
