Hello world. Earlier in December the PopLab attended ieee iedm in San Francisco. About 1/3 the usual attendance, but well-run, safe, and many breakthroughs. #IEDM21

All these fancy journals with high impact factors have a clever business model, making everyone run after them, but when it comes to learning a topic from the basics, there is no alternative to old school society journals.

In Dec’21, ieee iedm, several groups described improved 2D contacts: Both Intel and TSMC showed Sb can make 150-to-660 Ω⋅μm contacts to monolayer MoS2. Aravindh Kumar (our group + K. Saraswat) showed that In/Au alloys can also get us below 200 Ω⋅μm. #IEDM21 #IEDM2021

David Ferry's updated book on "Hot Carriers in Semiconductors" recently became available online, through a library subscription: iopscience.iop.org/book/978-0-750… Prof. Ferry (Arizona State University and ASU School of Electrical, Computer & Energy Eng) is one of the giants of semiconductor theory and simulation: ferry.faculty.asu.edu

Thank you! And many thanks to Intel for recognizing our work on "Doping & Contacts for 2D Materials". All the credit goes to Kirstin Schauble, Aravindh Kumar, Connor McClellan, Ryan Grady, Eilam Yalon (now Technion Israel), and other group alumni. Interesting opinion piece about the nature (and Nature) of publishing in experimental vs. theoretical physics. nature.com/articles/s4156…

A #STEM PhD in the US costs around $100k/yr in taxpayer (e.g. U.S. National Science Foundation) or other grant money that the faculty must raise. At Stanford, an experimental PhD student is about $140k/yr. Theory students (no lab, only coffee) are $116k/yr. A 5-year PhD is well over $0.5M! #AcademicTwitter

Chicago is the most crystalline city in the world (appliednetsci.springeropen.com/articles/10.10…). I took the "powder diffraction pattern" (radially integrated FFT) of Chicago and did a crystallographic refinement in TOPAS. The rectangular cell matches Chicago's 4x1 block shape!

This chart, mortgage as a percentage of GDP, is highly relevant. Most rural Indians own their homes outright. It is extremely important we preserve outright home ownership, even as people upgrade their homes as productivity & incomes improve. Many social benefits arise from this.

Just returned from Pop Lab & friends BBQ (from Mannix Lab, Mitra, Saraswat, Goodson, Wong groups), many thanks to Rob Bennett for organizing! Great to see new faces (welcome Haotian and Koustav) and several Bay Area alumni. Astro-Gato was hands-down the best party animal.

Good for 2D semiconductors. imec puts "atomic channels" on their technology roadmap in 2036. Many puzzles to solve till then! There is growing consensus that atomically thin 2D semiconductors are the main post-Si option. CFET = stacked NMOS and PMOS. tomshardware.com/news/imec-reve…
