On June 11, 1944, the United States commissioned the USS Missouri. A year later, the official surrender of Japan was signed on the deck of the battleship on Sept. 1945. The USS Missouri would go on to earn 11 battle stars for conflicts in WWII, Korea, and the Persian Gulf War.
June 12, 1948 marks the Women's Armed Services Integration Act. While Congress gave the WACs full Army status during the war, it was only temporary. The act, while providing a peacetime role for women in the military, capped the number of women soldiers at 2% of the total force.
