In subject & texture, Dunbar’s work reminds me of The Overlord Embroidery exhibited The D-Day Story. The tapestry was commissioned by Lord Dulverton in 1968 & designed by artist, Sandra Lawrence. Lawrence’s design was stitched by women from the Royal School of Needlework in London.

For all my new Twitter pals with an interest in , you may like a talk I gave in July of last year about my great-uncle, Ron Stone. Ron had been a combatant in the North African & Italian campaigns, and a prisoner-of-war in Stalag IV-B in Germany.

On 4th July 1944, 1st Bn Manchester Regiment was in action around Cheux.

The battalion had been in the line for three days, and both the and Mortar companies were busy firing on targets.

An AFPU cameraman was there to film the mortars...

Great photo to show how the bunkers on the beaches were positioned to fire along the beaches, and not straight out to the sea like is often imagined.

My grandfather died the year before I was born. My dad had very few photos of him, & in the ones Dad had, he was a background figure, his aged face shielded by a trilby. Then, recently, my aunt produced this photo of him & it felt like an introduction to a man in his prime.

The facade of Barrack nâ—¦6, Beaune-la-Rolande internment camp. In August 1942, 1,500 Jewish children were taken from here to Drancy, & from Drancy to Auschwitz-Birkenau to be murdered by the Nazis. Some were too young to know their own name: their parents had gone before them.
