this is fun.

we did something similar at the city. we asked the public to name our pigeon mascot. nellie fly beat out fiorello.

it would have been fun to go this route, though. mainly because it would have probably saved us 1,000 meetings about SEO issues.

The first IRE panel I sat on was w/ fellow midwesterners Jesse Hardman and Carrie Brown way back in 2016.

I remember 3 things: I was hungover (it was in New Orleans btw), Jesse brought a sign, no one fully understood what we were talking about.

Loved Jesse then; love Jesse now.

Thereā€™s a name for the kind of states and societies that defund , criminalize , ban books, and close educational programs that challenge the ruling partyā€™s ideological commitments.

Itā€™s not democracy.

Journalists: Weā€™ve got to do better. The framing of access as more important than credibility and the inability to cover whatā€™s happening within the framework of pro-democracy or anti- at this point in the game is malpractice.

All this focus on age, we wanted to have a different conversation. So we're asking how the youngest, newest voters are processing the election.

Working on this project w/ Chalkbeat (and basically every teen-centered civic & journalism org in the city):

I was lucky to work with Fazil THE CITYā€™s Missing Them project. He was a brilliant and thoughtful journalist and a generous colleague. He and Liz Donovan spent >1 year reporting on kids who lost a parent to COVID. Their stories led to a NY state bill to help grieving families.
