I call word problems "Math Texts" as they are not problems per say, but rather texts that describe problems. Understanding the text is paramount. We need to slow down & teach Ss how to interact with these kinds of texts before we invite them to solve the problems they describe.

Saw "alien method" on a Math Word Wall in 3rd grade today, so of course I looked it up. Like turtle head multiplication, it's another example of leading with a "cute" story and procedural knowledge rather than with the mathematics and conceptual understanding. #ElemMathChat

“On the verge of collapse” is misleading. When the school/hospital doesn’t actually fall over we say “phew, didn’t collapse!” while ignoring the deteriorating staffing and structural problems. It won’t fall over, it’ll just function worse & be more harmful to folks involved.
