There are several #Swift colonies in the older stone buildings of #Longridge #Lancashire . The true size of the town's population isn't known but myself and others have been recording nest site locations on the excellent RSPB Swift mapper app swiftmapper.org.uk USE IT!

Now we nervously await the #Swifts return and hope the renovations meet with their approval. HUUUGE thanks to our latest Swift hero, builder Martin Proctor from #Ribchester , who has set a shining example of how saving nature CAN be part of renovation works.

Protection of existing nest sites is a critical conservation action. #Swifts are extremely unobtrusive at the nest, most people who are privileged enough to have them sharing their homes with them don’t even know they are there and are thus easily destroyed by renovation work.

The old roof tiles were removed to locate and pinpoint existing #Swift nest sites in the soffit space, nests removed and replaced in exactly the same location in the new soffit space. Swifts use the same nest year after year so retaining these and access to them was critical.

So when scaffolding appeared here back in February, frantic efforts by concerned #Longridge folk to contact the building owner were made. Thankfully the contractor turned out to be the new owner who was willing to re-roof the building in a way that would protect the colony. 🌟😇
