The North Pacific's 'great red spot' of above-normal SSTs remained glaringly obvious in December, and has a lot to do with N Hemisphere weather patterns this winter so far. There's also a major #marineheatwave in the SW Atlantic, linked to Argentina drought. And La NiƱa persists.
NOAA divers supporting the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program ( #NCRMP ) completed all Caribbean surveys for 2023! Unfortunately, the team on this recent mission observed extensive coral bleaching across southeast Puerto Rico due to the #MarineHeatwave .

The latest 1-month difference in SSTs reveals the change under way with ENSO. With major warming in the eastern equatorial Pacific, La NiƱa criteria were barely met in February.
Outside the tropics, the #marineheatwave around New Zealand's South Island is a striking feature.
Having a closer look at SSTs around U.K. & Ireland a #MarineHeatwave is clear.
Extremely warm North Sea off the coast of E Scotland and NE England, waters 5C+ above average. Raw 16-18C.
The anomaly is perhaps unprecedented locally the waters are cooler near SE England.

NOAA's #MarineHeatwave Watch has categorized this event as a Category 4 (extreme) marine heatwave.
Looking forward to seeing BBC News (UK) David Shukman Ros Atkins Justin Rowlatt Chris Mason reporting these events.
If not, why not?
Between 2018 & 2021, Alaska'sĀ snow crabĀ population declined 90% - a loss of 10bn animals. Research by NOAA found a #MarineHeatwave linked to #ClimateChange led them to starve. Salmon, seabirds & seal populations fell too. Arctic temperatures have warmed 4x faster than elsewhere
