The world's only Belted Galloway Basking shark now resides in a Dublin museum. It is widely believed to have come about after an unholy dalliance between a cow and a summer visitor to the Dumfries and Galloway coast.

After years of hoping and wanting see one, we finally encountered our first yesterday off the coast of Tiree.
With at least 3 of them feeding at the surface.

A massive tick off my naturalist list! Thrilling!

Thanks to Islay Sea Adventures for taking us out! 🦈

A widespread claim regarding basking sharks is that the largest accurately measured was 12.27 m or 40 ft 3 inches, caught in New Brunswick in 1851. However, the size stated is probably untrue and is an example of the telephone game in action. A short-ish thread.

We are now in high season for on the coast. Plenty off Kerry but there's been few sightings off . Fingers crossed that changes! Here's a clip from last May, including underwater footage.

🪣📑🦈 It’s day! Surely our biggest fish should be at the top of everyone’s list? Great perspective seeing feeding from above but the best when watching from the boat or snorkeling! Join us this summer on one of the dedicated 3,4 or 7 day trips.

🦈👃- have an incredible sense of smell. When the 2nd biggest shark in the world has to find tiny zooplankton only a few mm long, they need to use other means to hunt.

Basking sharks 🦈 2nd largest fish in the world. They can reach lengths up to 40ft! You can see the massive gill rakers on the side which trap the zooplankton. Absolutely stunning creatures Tuesday

Recent article of mine in the fantastic Irish Wildlife Trust magazine on and the Irish Basking Shark Group (IBSG) campaign to afford them legal protection in 🇮🇪 Irish Basking Shark Jennifer Whitmore TD 🙌🦈💙

TLDR: timing is right for a National Basking Shark Conservarion Strategy 🙌
