Three days before #AustraliaDay 1788 there was (almost) the Great Anglo-French Naval Collision.

OTD in 1787 #USSALLIANCE sails past #SydneyHeads , 200 miles to seaward. Now a merchant ship, she is the first to pioneer this easternmost route to #China - from #Philadelphia , south around #Tasmania , reaching #Macao on 23 Dec after a voyage of 192 days, without anchoring. Cheeky.
OTD in 1770 at dawn #ENDEAVOUR left #BotanyBay a week after arrival. At noon she passed #SydneyHeads . #CaptainCook named the inlet #PortJackson , drew a halfmoon bay on his chart, but did not enter. He didn’t want his crew to see the deep, natural harbour behind the dogleg entry.
#ShipwreckSaturday - on return from #London in 1857 clipper #Dunbar dashed on the rocks at #SydneyHeads in 1857 killing 121 + leaving sold survivor James Johnson clung to the rocks for 3 days before being rescued. It remains NSW worst peacetime #maritime disaster... #shipwrecks
