Another lament to loss. The 'Kent Ghost Cabin' is an art project homage to the lost homestead cabins and the lifestyle they represented, built in the 40's and 50's in the Joshua Tree National Park in California. Created by artist Frederick Fulmer in 2018 #HouseHistoryHour
The land and cottage in Surrey that I investigated appears in the records of a C16 lay subsidy, the C17 hearth tax, the C18 land tax, C19 poor rates and the C20 land valuation survey. So my research gave me interesting insights into taxation over the centuries.

One of my #FamilyHistory oddities is this rate book for Brum ... Benjamin Samuel is my rellie. He existed. However William Samuel didn't exist as far as I can tell. Have constructed trees to find William Samuel to no avail.
Was someone careless? Telling fibs??

Findmypast The Ilford Burial Board was created to pay for an addition to the cemetery of St Mary's Church. There are 5 rate books between 1882-93 - invaluable to see who owned what & also what was built in the years before Kelly's of 1900 went fully by street.

In the newspapers, I discovered an auction at that same house and I was able to learn about all the contents. I could imagine the upright piano in the front room with the Chesterfield sofa and French clock. #househistoryhour
Melanie Backe-Hansen I wrote an article on a terrace of houses long gone (taken over by Alfred Harman for his new photographic paper co. which became Ilford Ltd); based solely on auctions and newspaper adverts. I like the idea that they were 'a pleasing distance from the High Road'
