The lectins are widely used as a model for studying protein-carbohydrate and protein-protein interactions. They exhibit a fascinating quaternary structure variation, which becomes important when they interact with multivalent glycoconjugates, for instance those on cell surfaces.

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are outer membrane components of gram-negative bacteria. They are large amphipathic glycoconjugates that consist of a lipid domain (hydrophobic) attached to a core oligosaccharide and a distal polysaccharide.
