Biden's greatest failure was running against Trump, and not running against Republicans. Welcoming the Lincoln Project types into the fold & normalizing the GOP, separating them from Trump, allowed Collins types to get off the hook. A selfish strategy that ruined down-ballot.

The marketplace of ideas has never quite worked the way most well-meaning liberals imagine. In the pre-digital world, there were more gatekeepers and therefore less speech and less bullshit to sift, but the price of that was a decidedly less democratized public sphere.

Republicans pass deeply unpopular laws and then peddle narratives that communicate the exact opposite message. Democrats keep making the case for popular laws they continually fail to pass. One side wins arguments, the other wins power.

A lot of us have been saying this for years. Polarization is the wrong frame. The central cleavage is liberal democracy. One party defends it. The other party rejects it. It was always heading to this place, but here we are.
