Biden's greatest failure was running against Trump, and not running against Republicans. Welcoming the Lincoln Project types into the fold & normalizing the GOP, separating them from Trump, allowed Collins types to get off the hook. A selfish strategy that ruined down-ballot.

If we saw the head of the ruling regime, and his party, react to the election results this way in any other country, we'd know exactly what we are looking at. And I'd say here, too, it's time to be honest and say we know exactly what we are looking at. vox.com/2020-president…

The marketplace of ideas has never quite worked the way most well-meaning liberals imagine. In the pre-digital world, there were more gatekeepers and therefore less speech and less bullshit to sift, but the price of that was a decidedly less democratized public sphere.

Republicans pass deeply unpopular laws and then peddle narratives that communicate the exact opposite message. Democrats keep making the case for popular laws they continually fail to pass. One side wins arguments, the other wins power.

"Moderates need radicals to expand their scope for action. Radicals need moderates to wield power in a giant heterogenous country with sclerotic institutions and deep wells of reaction. Neither camp could have defeated Trump on its own." Michelle Goldberg: nytimes.com/2020/11/16/opi…

A lot of us have been saying this for years. Polarization is the wrong frame. The central cleavage is liberal democracy. One party defends it. The other party rejects it. It was always heading to this place, but here we are.

.President Donald J. Trump incited insurrection, stoked a mob to attack democracy. Since leaving office, I've withheld commenting on LA officials but this must be condemned in strongest terms. Sen. Kennedy, Reps. Scalise, Higgins & Johnson enabled his erratic behavior, putting our country in peril.

"Members of Congress who sustained the president’s lie, despite the available and unambiguous evidence, betrayed their constitutional mission. Making his fictions the basis of congressional action gave them flesh." nytimes.com/2021/01/09/mag…

Democrats have a lot of good ideas to help people fast, and visibly. They have good ideas for deepening democracy, like the "For The People Act." But if they let Senate Republicans filibuster everything, they will lose in 2022, and they will deserve it. nytimes.com/2021/01/21/opi…

Don't get snowed by fake GOP outrage about Biden's criticism of right wing extremism. It's a sucker's game, a bad-faith effort to redefine "unity" as agreeing to absolve Republicans from blame for enabling Trump and his attack on our country. My latest: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…

I found out the slave owner Gen. Philemon Thomas was the father of Louis Thomas my grandmothers great grandfather. He was a general in the war of 1812, he ran for Governor of Louisiana, and was the congressman for the 2nd congressional district.
