According to FOIA docs obtained by Hell Gate *subscribe today!*, the surveillance tech previewed by Mayor Eric Adams last week had a 25% (!!!) alarm rate during a pilot in the Bronx, with 85% of those yielding false positives.

Basically, it's useless.

The world's tallest jail is coming to NYC's Chinatown. But first, locals have to make it through the demolition: Cracks in the wall of a senior center. A pediatric center uprooted bc of the noise. Restaurants that worry they'll have to close

Great portrait of how absurdly imbalanced the NYC's property tax system is, by Mihir Zaveri + Camille Baker
Great example: a condo that sold for $115M was valued by the city at $10M

Evan Gershkovich has been a Russian captive for a year. He's a caring friend, a brilliant colleague and an innocent man.

It's beyond time to let him go.

Interesting that Westfield isn't making the same claims about crime at its more successful retail space in the Oculus, which is basically next door, as Gothamist smartly points out. Seems more like a retail-is-down than crime-is-up story

Cat's out of the bag: Open Street groups (often all-volunteer) are struggling to get paid back by the city. 31st Avenue Open Street Collective hasn't seen a dime from 2023 expenses— a dire situation that threatens the program's long-term viability, as the 2024 season approaches. nyc.streetsblog.org/2024/03/11/chi…
