My main contributors and architects were Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Donato, Giacomo della Porta, and Maderno. Bramante produced the original design for my Basilica in 1506. I was finally complete on the 18th November 1626, and was consecrated by Pope Urban VIII.

I am used as the pope's main church and a center for pilgrimage. I have over 100 tombs which contain 91 popes. In a subterranean crypt, directly below the dome and the main altar, is the tomb of St. Peter himself.

Message from my friend Paulina: I went to Vatican City and was amazed by the intricate detail of St. Peter’s Basilica. I vividly remember is the ceiling. Beautiful gold surrounded by columns. Overall, this is one of the most breathtaking buildings and I long to see it again.

Maria took one of the pictures as she admired my beautiful building materials. These were limestone, brick and marble. The columns in perfect symmetry caught her eyes.

Fun Fact: The Statue of Liberty could fit inside of St Peter’s Basilica, even on her foundation with her torch raised. As a matter of fact, her 305-foot stature would be dwarfed under the towering 450-foot dome of the church.

Did you know? That Michelangelo’s famous carving of the Pieta is housed in St Peter’s Basilica and is protected by bulletproof glass. It was carved from a single slab of marble and was the only work he ever signed. #wow 😱
