I love that the producer of Your Name. (2016) said the movie was co-written by the director and the composer. (source: his essay at the end of the novelization)

For everyone making a scary music playlist, include #AlexNorth's score for #TheBadSeed (1956). It brings the fear, and no one else in the experience will recognize it, so they'll feel the emotions without getting pulled out of the experience by a reminder of what it's from.

If you like the #Jaws theme and the #Kraken them from Pirates of the Caribbean, check out the Mummy theme from the Universal Classic Monster movies.

How is it that a guitar and a piano can play the same pitch, but sound different? The answer is timbre (pronounced "TAM-bur"), or tone color. What's responsible for timbre? Well, it's kind of complicated, but really cool. A timbre for beginners thread! 🧵

*Every* time I discuss form in pop music, I end up bringing up @alyssa_barna's work on the "dance chorus" in recent top 40 music. It's become an indispensable resource for me, and I love how accessibly she presents her ideas. vimeo.com/440793933

We talk a lot about how the #Jaws #theme sounds like #Dvořák, but we don't talk nearly enough about how it sounds like the Mummy's Crawl from The Universal Classic Monster movies.

The thing about “genius” is that it’s a fine word, but it becomes useless as a label if the user doesn’t acknowledge that it’s completely subjective and culturally constructed

I find it fascinating that current hip-hop has a genre convention that makes it totally acceptable for the artist to casually use their own name in the lyrics as it if was "son", "girl", "you", etc. In other genres, that would feel really weird.

It’s too bad bII6 is the Neapolitan instead of the augmented 6th chords, which *actually* come in three distinct flavors.

It's our first semester trying out our new theory curriculum and I've never had more students tell me "I love theory" and "theory is my favorite class."

This is one of the biggest weaknesses of the field of Music Theory, especially in the way it's taught. Lots of looking for the *what* and barely any discussion of the *why*.
