Snow + Neckdown. Uses snowpiles to show where Halifax's streets can make more room for people walking and biking. Curated by @heycornpusher & @tjhfx.

Now that everyone knows what a #Sneckdown is, remember THE POINT ISNT TO DEBATE THE SMALL DETAILS OF AN ILLUSTRATION IN A GIF. It’s to understand the basic point that we could easily reconsider street space for many other things if we reconsider the excessive space given to cars.

This crosswalk is used every morning by a “walking school bus”—a group of kids & parents walking to school together. Speeding cars are a frequent danger. It would be nice to have a bumpout here to slow the cars and shorten the crossing distance—a sneckdown shows there’s space.

Halifax installed these two bump-outs on Agricola as part of a pilot to “daylight” the intersection—preventing parked cars from blocking pedestrian sightlines. Mother Nature just filled in the other two corners with sneckdowns for them.

The school zone signs do little to slow speeding drivers here (and the number of drivers losing control & jumping the curb proves it), but a sneckdown-inspired road narrowing might do a lot more.

Little bit of #sneckdown fun on the walk home from the Winter Bike Week event. You could fit a whole double lane bike way in that unused road! Sneckdown Halifax

Weeks after the last significant snowfall, we still have vehicles parking over a metre from the curb. Maybe the road doesn’t always need to be this wide? #sneckdown

Best surprise: big fixes to Sackville/Bell intersection—no more pseudo-sliplane, bollards and precast curb create much shorter crossing distance for pedestrians (that sneckdown will finally be a neckdown!). This is the quick-and-easy stuff we should be doing everywhere.
