When a nation adopts assisted suicide, it is as a neat procedure to tidy up some sad cases. Later on they discover it is not a procedure but a living thing, a sea-monster devouring the shipwrecked—the disabled, the mentally ill, the guilt-ridden, the poor. firstthings.com/web-exclusives…

Remember, #assisteddying is NOT an inevitability, euthanising the weak is not progress, the commodification of death (or death on demand) will never be a good thing. 🙄 There’s a lot of money being spent to persuade you otherwise…

What I’m hoping will happen this week: 1. The Leadbeater Bill fails. 2. Politicians accept that this debate has exposed the shocking underfunding of palliative care. 3. We switch our attention away from assisted suicide and on to improving end-of-life care.

There are much more fundamental issues with the bill, but it is noteworthy that Kim Leadbeater repeatedly distorts what it actually says.

Powerful intervention from Dominic Grieve against the Bill As Liberty and the EHRC have noted, the safeguards are so inadequate that the Bill is likely incompatible with the ECHR - and is contrary to the Rule of Law Govt shouldn't hide being neutrality to let this through

In the last 14 years, no Private Members Bill has ever had more than three or four hours debate following Second Reading. If MPs vote for the assisted suicide Bill on Friday, the exact text they vote for will likely become law. We urge every MP to reject this flawed, rushed Bill.

A year or so ago Esther Rantzen - who started the latest assisted dying ball rolling - reckoned she'd be lucky to survive to Christmas 2023 - ie she'd have qualified to die under assisted dying. Shows the guesswork involved in estimating remaining life expectancy. #r4today

Things you might not realise about Kim Leadbeater MP’s Private Members Bill to legalise assisted suicide for terminally ill people – a thread 🧵

Passed because Esther Rantzen is mates with our PM. Patients lived are worth less than a days debate in the Commons. The worst Bill passed in modern times. God help the vulnerable and disabled 🙏🏼 #AssistedDyingBill

🚨DR UK's Statement on Passing of Assisted Dying Bill We stand firmly against a law that risks pressuring Disabled people into decisions driven by lack of options rather than genuine choice. This bill could reinforce the narrative that Disabled people’s lives are less valuable.

Let’s not forget that half of the Reform Party Reform UK including Richard Tice MP 🇬🇧 and Rupert Lowe MP voted for this bill. Lowe didn’t even think about it. Absolutely despicable and ruins their reputation as a conservative party. Nigel Farage MP to his credit was good

If you want to control people’s thoughts, you start by controlling their language. It’s assisted suicide, not assisted dying.

'Many MPs, in five- or ten-years’ time, will claim sheepishly that ‘we didn’t know this would happen’, or ‘we didn’t vote for this’ when the disabled and the vulnerable are killed. But MPs cannot be allowed to claim ignorance.' ✍️ Yuan Yi Zhu buff.ly/3CQurVy

Liz Carr says disabled people find the prospect of assisted dying terrifying. She says the law could change culture, medical relationships, and the value placed on certain lives.
